  • SSSNA Development Activities Meeting – September 2023

South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association is hosting a virtual Development Activities Meeting (DAM) on Wednesday, Sept. 20th, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. to review a revised plan for 2 projects.

    What:

    1. 2712 Burham Street Development: They are seeking a use variance with Zoning Board of Adjustment to have two single-family residential attached units (one in each parcel) in an R1D zoning district that only allows single-family residential detached.
    2. Arlington Recreation Center Mural: This is a community review for an art project on a city owned wall.

Why:  SSSNA is a Registered Community Organization (RCO) through the Department of City Planning to provide input and feedback on local development activities and planning procedures in partnership with community stake holders.

Where: This will be a virtual Zoom meeting. The meeting zoom link will be sent via email to the SSSNA e-blast list before the meeting. If you do not receive it, please email info@southsideslopes.org to be added to the list or receive the Zoom meeting link.

  • Arlington Recreation Center Mural Update

After sifting through the survey respondents feedback, the artist, Roberto Maxwell, tried to incorporate as many elements as possible. What do you think?

Of the 75+ people who attended the South Side Slopes summer picnic, the biggest feedback was to incorporate some animals into the forest. Please let us know if you have any further feedback for us!

We are hoping to finalize the design and present at the Pittsburgh Art Commission for review in September.

  • Enter the South Side Slopes Flower Contest and Showcase Your Green Thumb!

Do you love to garden? Are you excited to show off your green thumb this year? Then enter the South Side Slopes Flower Contest, open to all Slopes residents!

Focusing on the front-facing façade of your home, we will have prizes for:
    1) Best Simple Planter (for those with little space but go above and beyond with a single pot or window box)

    2) Best Front Garden (for those who have more than a simple planter and want to go all in)

    3) Most Popular (where your vote will determine the best out there!)

To be eligible, your garden space must be at least 80% green. We love a good statue, but we want to see your green thumbs at work!

Submissions must be in by Wednesday, June 14th with garden spaces to be ready to photograph by Friday, June 30th.

Voting will occur between July 5th to July 10th and winners will be announced at our annual community picnic at Bandi Schaum Community Garden on July 11th.

Feeling like trekking it? Maps will be available on Social Media around July 5th to help you explore the beautiful gardens and enjoy the scenery.

The South Side Slopes Flower Contest aims to beautify the neighborhood and showcase the gardening talents of our residents. Whether you have a small space or a grand front garden, we want to celebrate your efforts and inspire others in our community. • Climate Change Movie at St Paul’s Monastery

    Climate Change
How aware are we of this problem?
Is there anything we can do about it?
Have we even talked about it?

On Wednesday, March 8th, St. Paul’s Monastery will present a movie on the subject of climate change – The Letter. The film will be shown in the Retreat Center Conference Room – where we have held our Neighborhood monthly meetings in the past. The movie presents how climate change is altering the Amazon, India, Africa, and the Barrier Reefs of Mother Earth. Individuals experiencing these changes were invited by Pope Francis to come to Rome to tell their story, and share their experiences. The film helps us to better understand what is happening to our common home, the earth. Discussion will follow.

Everyone is invited to attend, no cost. Refreshments will be available.

If you plan to attend, please call St. Paul’s Monastery and let them know at
    412-381-1188.

  • Proposed SSSNA Bylaws Update

UPDATE: This Bylaws change was approved at a vote at the May 14, 2022 General Meeting of the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association. The updated Bylaws are now posted on our website here: SSSNA Bylaws

The Board of the South Slide Slopes Neighborhood Association is proposing a change to the bylaws of the association. This change to the bylaws regards the eligibility to be considered for board membership. It would more accurately reflect how we engage with our community and broaden the pool of potential board members.

Here is how Article IV: Members, Section 1. b. currently reads:

Voting Members: those members eighteen (18) years or older who attended at least two public meetings in the past year.”

We propose that this sentence of the bylaw be revised to read:

Voting members: those members eighteen (18) years or older who attended at least two public meetings, events, or activities convened by the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association in the past year.”

The entire current bylaws are available here: http://www.southsideslopes.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/SSSNA-Bylaws-UpdatedMarch2020.pdf

We, like many other for- and not-for-profit organizations, have experienced a shift in the way that we interact with our members – and the way that they interact with us. It’s clear that the pandemic has fundamentally changed how people are choosing to spend their time outside of family, work, and other obligations.

It’s important for us to understand and respond to these shifts. Expanding the pool of potential Board Members to more accurately reflect how the organization engages with the community – now, and going forward – will put us in a better position to achieve our goals. We see the challenge of attracting and retaining board members as a long term one – and this is the appropriate opportunity to make this small, but impactful change.

This proposed change will be published in the South Pittsburgh Reporter and on our website. The change was introduced to the membership at the March Annual meeting. We will have a discussion before a formal vote at our May 10th general meeting. This vote will be open to all board members and general members in good standing. If you have any thoughts on the topic in the meantime, please reach out to any of our Board Members in the meantime and let’s chat!

    Thank you,

    Blake M. McLaren

President of the Board – SSSNA
